Veneers can be used to transform your smile for the better by covering damaged, discolored, or misshapen teeth. If you’re interested in getting veneers, you should make sure you’re aware of the impact they’ll have on your day-to-day life afterward. In particular, you’ll want to consider how they’ll affect your diet. Are there any foods that you won’t be able to eat after getting veneers? Here’s what patients should generally expect.
Your Diet While Wearing Temporary Veneers
After the initial preparations have been made, it will take about two to three weeks for your permanent veneers to be completed. Until then, you will need to wear temporary veneers to protect your teeth. Since these temporary veneers are only meant to last for a relatively short amount of time, they aren’t as durable as permanent ones. Thus, while you are wearing temporary veneers, you will need to be careful about what you eat.
It’s recommended that patients with temporary veneers stay away from raw vegetables, popcorn, and other hard foods. Tough meats and crusty bread are also best avoided, as are sticky foods like taffy that might pull the veneers off the teeth. Finally, if you don’t want your temporary veneers to become discolored, you should refrain from drinking any dark-colored beverages like coffee.
To stay on the safe side while your temporary veneers are in place, you should maintain a diet of soft foods. Good options include eggs, mashed potatoes, pasta, bananas, and chicken.
Your Diet While Wearing Permanent Veneers
Permanent veneers aren’t as easily damaged as temporary veneers, and you can expect them to be stain-resistant if they’re made out of porcelain. Therefore, it will be safe for you to enjoy a wider variety of foods again once your permanent veneers have been placed.
That said, dark-colored beverages can still potentially leave stains on your veneers, so try to limit how often you drink them. Also, you shouldn’t try to bite down on popcorn kernels or other extremely hard foods that might damage the veneers. Finally, it’s generally recommended that you cut down on alcohol, as it can weaken the cement responsible for keeping the veneers attached to your teeth.
If you want your veneers to last as long as possible, it’s important to be mindful of the foods you’re eating. Talk to your dentist if you have any further questions about what your diet should look like after the veneer placement process.
